Intro to Rock Climbing

Get started with climbing. You will get introduced to the basic equipment, rappelling & belaying basics, learn essential knots, and climb  your first top rope routes.

We hike an easy, short approach to one of our practice rocks where we immediately start with the lessons. After the first climb, we have a simple breakfast BBQ, then climb or hike a bit more.

Ideal for beginners or those who haven’t climbed for a long time. Also interesting for indoor climbers who want to give it a try on real rocks.

What you need

  • backpack
  • hiking boots/shoes
  • sun protection ( hat & lotion )
  • ( harness )
  • ( helmet )
  • ( climbing shoes )

Ideally, you have some climbing shoes, but all equipment can be borrowed from GM as well and on these easy routes, normal hiking  boots or shoes are ok, too.

Climbing practice

Everybody is welcome, including beginners and experienced climbers. Ideally, beginners have done our “Intro to Rock Climbing”, else we waste a lot of time on the basics.

We practice on some of our own top-rope routes or the bolted routes established by the Ghana Rock Climbing Group.

We leave very early from Accra with a max. of 6-8 climbers. Once at the rock, we match the climbers to their abilities and then practice, practice, practice.

What you need

  • backpack
  • hiking boots/shoes
  • sun protection ( hat & lotion )
  • climbing shoes
  • ( harness )

It’s essential to have your climbing shoes because the routes are usually too difficult for boots. It is possible to borrow climbing shoes from us in addition to the other equipment needed.

Advanced Climbing

Ideally, you have done our intro to climbing and participated in several climbing practices for this. Climbers with previous experience are also welcome.

We cover topics like

  • anchor building
  • trad climbing equipment
  • placing protection devices
  • advanced belaying and rappelling techniques
  • lead climbing
  • self-rescue

It’s essential to have your own climbing shoes. Ideally you have some or all of the other equipment as well, but equipment can also be borrowed from GM.

Climbing Exploration

This is where it all comes together: hiking, route finding, rappelling, climbing, exploration, and sometimes bivouacking or camping.

During a climbing exploration, we look for new routes and new climbing opportunities out in the bush. Sometimes the approaches are very long with heavy backpacks. Route finding can be difficult and involve extensive ‘bushwacking’. Climbing might or might not work out.

Climbing explorations are by invitation only and you must have hiked and climbed with us before.

Always a great adventure with lots of type 2 fun.
